Harston's Changing Population

Hilary Roadley

The first written information on Harston’s population came with the Domesday Book but that only gave the number of peasants but not their families. Historians have used this statistic and other taxation records to estimate the total population of the village. From 1841 we have more accurate census records giving us the total population.

From 1086 to the beginning of the C19th the population was small, 2-400 people. From 1800-1900 it more than doubled, and from 1900-2000 it doubled again.
