Harston Local History Group is an informal group of volunteers who started October 2014 to try to gather together all the historical information we can find about Harston and find ways of sharing it with the local community.
We created our own history website – harstonhistory.org.uk We have scanned old photos, collected oral memories from some of the older residents, produced a village walk leaflet and given free illustrated talks on different topics of Harston’s history throughout the year. We also provide monthly history displays on the first Saturday morning of each month at the Better Brew Fair Trade café in the Village Hall.
We received a Heritage Lottery Grant at the end of June 2015 to ‘Explore Harston’s Heritage’ which enabled us to set up the website and purchased equipment to enable us to give talks, do research, etc.
This grant is now exhausted and, in order to stay in existence, we are exploring ways of raising money. To do this, we have started asking local businesses if they would like to advertise on our website in return for a donation to the Group’s funds. This can contain (almost) anything that the donor may request. We are in the early stages of approaching businesses, but some have already made donations. These businesses can be seen by clicking ‘Support Local Businesses’ on the home page.
