Harston vicars

There has been a church at Harston since at least 1086 when it was mentioned in the Domesday Book.  The earliest name we have discovered for the ‘head’ of this church (not necessarily a vicar), dates from 1194. Names from then until towards the end of the 14th century have not yet been found but after that there is a reasonably complete list.

Around 1400 the vicars were occasionally assisted by chaplains. Two canons of Barnwell held office in 1461 and 1475 and another in 1521. A former Cambridge Augustine friar was here in 1539; two Welshmen between 1572 to 1596; and two Scots (under James I) from 1611 to 1614. Between 1607 and 1626 we had nine vicars, mostly recent graduates who rapidly quit for better livings.

For most of the 18th century, Harston was held with fellowships at Cambridge. The vicars rarely employed curates and rode over from Cambridge to hold one service every Sunday.

The list below is drawn from different sources. There is not always complete agreement between the sources over the spelling of names or exact dates. The title of ‘vicar’ is not given where temporary appointments are made or a not fully qualified person fill the post, such as the period 1564-72.
