Baptist Church Old Graveyard - Memorial Inscriptions

In his book ‘200 Years of Witness A history of Harston Baptist Church’ Arthur Wisbey states that the first church building was erected in 1799 where the old graveyard now is. Also that this building was opened about December 1799 – January 1800.

Oldest memorial inscription found in this graveyard is for Joseph Scar who died 27 May 1799 aged 63 years which was, presumably, during the building period

The memorial inscriptions were surveyed by the Cambridgeshire Family History Society (CFHS) in 1999. Unfortunately, in most cases, the full inscriptions were not recorded as the focus was on names and dates rather than any family tributes, bible passages, etc. However, it is 35 years since this survey and the condition of many gravestones has deteriorated. The survey has provided a record of some inscriptions which would otherwise have been lost.

In this survey we have tried, not always successfully, to record every word inscribed on the gravestones. There have been some gravestones since the CFHS survey and these have been added to the record. There are also some gravestones which were in the CFHS survey which could not be found but we have included them in this record. There are also some which could not be identified and do not appear to be in the CFHS survey. Photographs of these have been included in our record.
