Samuel Northrop 1884 - 1916

Samuel Northrop was born in Hauxton in 1884, the eldest of 10 children of Samuel and Agnes nee January. By 1891 the family had moved to Harston where Samuel lived until his marriage to Bertha Stockbridge of Melbourn in 1907 when he moved in with his in-laws. his parents gravestone stands in Button End cemetery

He joined the 7th Battalion, Suffolk Regiment and went to France in May 1915. On 10 January 1916 they were part of the Front line north of La Bassee canal near Givenchy when Samuel was killed in action.

He is buried at the Guards cemetery, Windy Corner, Cuinchy, Pas de Calais, France grave III. B. 11.

He is commemorated on the Melbourn war memorial and the memorial inside All Saints church, Melbourn.
