George Cornell 1892 - 1917

George was born in Harston on 4 April 1892, the sixth son of James & Elizabeth (nee Wisbey). In 1901 he lived at 6 Hurrell’s Row with his father, stepmother Naomi and 6 brothers and one sister. By 1911 he had moved to London as a salesman and he married Ada Alice Coe there in 1914. His daughter Nora Lilian was born 28 Aug 1915 in Finchley.

He was in the Royal Notts & Derby Special Reserves until 1908 and was a salesman in London when he enlisted. On 7 November 1915 he was appointed to the Queens (Royal West Surrey) Regiment.

He was killed on 27 Feb 1917 when the 7th Battalion of Queens Regiment attacked Irles.

He is buried at the Adanac military cemetery, Miraumont. His wife requested that his gravestone be inscribed ‘Always remembered by his loving wife and daughter’

He was added to the Harston War Memorial in 2016.
